The 6% figure is calculated from total government revenue — comprising PRRT, royalties and fees, and corporate tax — as a share of oil and gas industry sales revenue, based on data from the APPEA Oil and Gas Industry Financial Survey 1987–88 to 2020–21, published by Australian Energy Producers (the industry's own peak body). The most recent year for which industry-reported data is publicly available.
Effective personal income tax rates are calculated using 2025–26 ATO income tax brackets plus the 2% Medicare levy, without deductions assumed.
The $17 billion figure is based on Australia Institute modelling of a 25% flat tax applied to the value of Australia's gas exports (FY2024–25 export value approximately A$64 billion).
